Well, summer is in full swing here in New England! Postgrad life has been exciting and eventful with each day getting better than the next, and Monday was definitely one for the books. Although I thoroughly enjoy hanging out down by the beach and soaking up serious vitamin D, I was growing anxious over the fact that I didn’t have a job. I don’t know what it is about me, but when I’m not insanely busy, I feel as though I don’t have a purpose in life. I think it’s the overachiever in me. Actually, it’s definitely the overachiever in me, which was why I was ready to take on a new endeavor.

Last week, my aunt called to tell me about a woman she has been working for and how she was looking for someone to manage her social media accounts. Her name is Joy Feldman, and she is a nutrition expert who has just launched a nonprofit organization called The Picture of Children’s Health. Along with this newly found organization, Joy also has her own practice with clients worldwide and has written two books on nutrition, Joyful Cooking: In the Pursuit of Good Health and Is Your Hair Made of Donuts? Her second book, Is Your Hair Made of Donuts? which is geared towards children, focuses on practicing healthy eating habits and the consequences that come from eating unhealthy foods. This is the basis of her nonprofit organization, and here’s where I come in.

Joy kindly asked me to manage all social media accounts where I’ll be posting recipes, inspirational quotes, and articles that promote mindful eating for children. I absolutely love working with social media (I was the Social Media Chair for an organization in college), and knew immediately that this job was a perfect fit for me. She also asked me to help her co-write articles on children’s health in the coming months for their newsletters. How perfect is that? I’m so thrilled that Joy asked me to be a part of such an important cause, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for The Picture of Children’s Health. Who knows, maybe I’ll even learn a thing or two about proper nutrition, and start to make better choices when it comes to food. My cupcake/brownie addiction is starting to get a little out of hand.

To celebrate the beginning of this job, my parents decided to treat me to a delicious dinner at one of my favorite places. We headed over to Constantino’s Venda Ravioli on Federal Hill to enjoy a gorgeous summer night with a live band and fantastic Italian food. Now, if you all remember from my previous post “Get To Know Me“, I’ve never really had the best of luck when it comes to servers at restaurants. Between receiving a drink in a sippy cup and having servers overlook me, it’s not that hard to grow frustrated in these types of situations. However, Monday night was a little different.

After we were seated, our server, John (also known as Whip), came over to give us the restaurant’s nightly specials and take our drink orders. When it came time for me to give my order, John spoke directly to me and didn’t look at my parents when asking me a question. Sounds so simple, right? Unfortunately that doesn’t happen too often, but I immediately noticed the way he treated me, and couldn’t help but be impressed by it. Before I could say anything to my parents, I looked over at my mother, who was already all choked up, as she started to explain how touched she was by his actions. I know it can be a little difficult for someone when they first meet me and don’t know my abilities. But, it is equally hurtful to be completely ignored after the people I am with make it very clear I can take care of myself.

So, Whip, thank you. Thank you for looking past my disability and treating me with the same respect you give to the rest of your customers. I can’t stress enough how much I appreciate that. I don’t come across people like you every day, and having you as my waiter was definitely a different, yet really great, experience for me. I’ve also never written a post about someone I just met, but I hope that this will get you some good tips in the future?! Whip, aside from that delicious dessert I had, you really made my night (and my parents’ night) 100x better, and I just had to let you know.

  2. Congrats on the new job, I’m a friend of Lisa D and reading your posts make me realize how amazing you are. I look forward to the day I get a chance to meet you, your attitude and ability to truly make all of us think of how we treat everyone gives me a sense of remembering that I always need to treat everyone how I would like to be treated. Love reading your blogs and hope the new job is wonderful, they are lucky to get such a wonderful thoughtful young woman.
