Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the sister disease to ALS, is a neuromuscular disease that causes progressive muscle weakness and will eventually lead to death. It is the number one genetic killer in infants under the age of 2. Although each individual is affected differently, everyday activities including walking, breathing, and swallowing are compromised to an extent depending on its severity. It is important to note that this degenerative disease only harms those affected physically, and has no impact on their mental abilities.
